Case Study No. 1840: Master Librarian (Castlefailure)

Castlevania SotN : Noises in the Library
2:30
!!WARNING!! This video is an "inside reference" to Castlevania SotN. There's a good chance if you haven't played it, you may not get the running gag. Otherwise, enjoy!

When Castlevania SotN was first released for the Playstation, I was love-struck. Virtually everything about the game was cult-worthy... everything but the dialogue. In the tradition of poorly translated video game scripting, it was the librarian that won the prize for most committed delivery to a line that made little sense: "Young Master, I cannot aid one who opposes the Master."

I also found it hilarious that the developers would throw in an Easter egg like smashing the librarian into the ceiling 100 times... perhaps, it was no coincidence.

This was my first fully animated flash toon, which was hosted and featured by the awesome guys over at Newgrounds.

For the best viewing quality, check out the original flash:

[scene opens inside of the library in Dracula's castle, as the Master Librarian (long grey beard, red hat, red monk's robe) is sitting at his desk reading a book, when the vampire Alucard suddenly appears]
ALUCARD: Greetings, old man.
MASTER LIBRARIAN: Whaaa?!
ALUCARD: I seek your help ...
[no longer terrifed, the librarian is suddenly all smiles at the request]
MASTER LIBRARIAN: Anything you need, Alucard!
ALUCARD: You must help me ...
[cut to a closeup of Alucard's face]
ALUCARD: Destroy Lord Dracula!
[cut back to the librarian, who is once again terrified]
MASTER LIBRARIAN: Whaaa?!
[cut to the librarian standing up behind his desk]
MASTER LIBRARIAN: But Master, I cannot aid one who opposes the Master.
ALUCARD: Be I not your Master?
[cut to the librarian smiling broadly]
MASTER LIBRARIAN: Why of course, young Alucard!
[cut to a closeup of Alucard's eye]
ALUCARD: And must not you obey me, old man?
[cut to a closeup of the librarian's eye (as he is visibly shaking)]
MASTER LIBRARIAN: Indeed, your every command!
ALUCARD: Help me kill Dracula!
MASTER LIBRARIAN: But Master, I cannot aid one who opposes the Master.
[a giant bead of sweat appears over Alucard's head]
ALUCARD: But you must obey me!
[cut to the librarian smiling broadly]
MASTER LIBRARIAN: Absolutely, I must!
[cut to Alucard (appearing gigantic) slamming his fist down upon the desk, as the librarian cowers in fear]
ALUCARD: Help me kill Dracula!
MASTER LIBRARIAN: But Master, I cannot aid one who opposes the Master ...
[cut to a closeup of Alucard's face, as his eye begins twitching]
ALUCARD: I ...
[cut to Alucard's eyes glowing blood red]
ALUCARD: I am your doom!
[cut to Alucard appearing beneath the librarian's chair (with the librarian still sitting in it), as he levitates into the air]
MASTER LIBRARIAN: Whaaa!
[the camera follows the two into the air, when the librarian is suddenly smashed into the ceiling ... Alucard floats back down with the chair, but the librarian remains "stuck" in the ceiling (his face no longer visible)]
[the camera slowly zooms onto the librarian's limp body, as dramatic music plays ... then Alucard returns and smashes the chair into the ceiling again, crushing the librarian again and again]
[cut to a shot of Dracula asleep on his throne, snoring loudly (but the camera shakes slightly as the sound of Alucard smashing the librarian over and over can be heard from off camera)]
[cut to a shot of the Grim Reaper staring into a glowing purple vortex (as the camera again shakes while the sound of Alucard smashing the librarian over and over can be heard from off camera)]
GRIM REAPER: Hmm?
[cut to an exterior shot of Dracula's castle (as the camera again shakes while the sound of Alucard smashing the librarian over and over can be heard from off camera)]
[cut back to the library, as Alucard lands lightly on the ground ... soon followed by the librarian's chair crashing back down to its original position]
ALUCARD: If be you not ally of me, then enemy you be of mine me you be ...
[seemingly confusing himself, Alucard turns and walks out the door]
ALUCARD: Farewell, old man ...
[cut to an overhead shot of Alucard exiting the library, as the librarian's limp hand drops into frame before the scene immediately cuts to black]

Today's guest is one that has been requested by others and who others were surprised not to see on The Interviewer's list. He has been rampant throughout the Flash Portal due to his short time here with works such as Twilight: Hairy Moon, subject_b, and Dot Dot Dot - Animated. He is also a very prominent voice actor lending his voice to many others works. He is none other than, RicePirate.

Q: How did you find Newgrounds and why did you join?

A: I was trying to show a friend of mine Metal Gear Awesome on Youtube. Instead, we'd stumbled upon Egoraptor's animated plea for assholes to stop uploading his videos from Newgrounds to Youtube. I promptly visited Newgrounds and quickly discovered a good number of online cartoons that I'd enjoyed over the years had, in fact, been created specifically for Newgrounds.

I joined so I could write a review for Girlchan in Paradise Ep2. It was the first thing I did on Newgrounds.

Q: Your first flash on Newgrounds is entitled Castlefailure SotN. Why a video game parody for your first flash and looking back on it are you still proud of it?

A: Well, as you probably gathered, the bulk of my initial exposure to Newgrounds was the work of Egoraptor. So the Awesome series was likely my inspiration. The SotN Librarian-gag was something I'd wanted to riff off for quite some time. So I decided to stop "thinking about it" and just make it.

I am still proud of it. Not because it's good, but because it was the first flash animation I'd completed, and it would flip a switch in my mind that I could actually see my ideas through to completion. They wouldn't necessarily be masterpieces, but they were created ... and not just doodles in a journal or a joke in my head.

From giantbomb.com:

MASTER LIBRARIAN - The merchant in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

He ordinarily offers you an array of items at set prices--but his room also contains other rare items you can get for free. If you're in his little desk room, you'll see that his chair is placed over a narrow gap. Head to the room directly below this, where you can see the gap's bottom opening. Using your super jump, jump into the narrow gap and lift the Librarian up into the air--do this multiple times and make sure that he doesn't hit the ceiling before landing back in place. If you do this correctly, you will receive the Ring of Arcana. If you do it correctly twice thereafter, you'll receive Axe Lord Armor and the Dracula Tunic.
