[Mr. Kubodera, the homeroom teacher, stumbles into Class 3 and pulls out a knife]
KUBODERA: Guhhh ... Ahh!
[after apparently struggling to control his arm, he plunges the knife into his neck]
KOUICHI: Huh!
[he splits up blood (hitting several of the students) and then collapses to the floor]
AYA: Ahhh!
[the male librarian runs in and accesses the scene]
CHIBIKI: Everyone out!
[he turns to a girl standing in the doorway]
CHIBIKI: Call the police, and an ambulance, now!
[she runs off]
CHIBIKI: Was anyone else hurt?
[he turns to Kouichi]
CHIBIKI: Sakakibara-san, are you injured?
KOUICHI: [nervously] I'm fine ...

"Another" is a Japanese fictional mystery horror novel by Yukito Ayatsuji, published on October 29, 2009 by Kadokawa Shoten. A manga adaptation by Hiro Kiyohara was serialized between the May 2010 and January 2012 issues of Kadokawa Shoten's Young Ace. A TV anime series produced by P.A. Works premiered on January 10, 2012, and a live-action film will be released in Japanese theatres on August 4, 2012.

Premise
In 1972, a very popular honor student named Misaki died partway through the school year in Yomiyama North Middle School's class 3-3. The rest of the students, devastated by the unexpected loss, decided to carry on as if their classmate were still alive, going so far as to keep the desk in place and bringing it to the graduation ceremony. Yet no one could explain why their classmate, already dead and buried, was present on the graduation photo.

In spring 1998, 15-year-old student Koichi Sakakibara arrives from Tokyo in Yomiyama, to stay with his grandparents while his father works in India. He transfers into Class 3-3 but misses the first few weeks as a pneumothorax keeps him hospitalised. While in the hospital, he receives a visit from his classmates and meets a mysterious girl wearing his school's uniform called Mei Misaki, who seems to be visiting the morgue.

Once recovered, Koichi goes to school and tries to adapt. His aunt Reiko, a teacher at Yomiyama North, gives him a few pointers but, like his peers, remains evasive when it comes to their behavior towards Mei, who is treated by all as if she did not exist. Koichi is further confounded by the air of mystery around class 3-3 and the fact that it is isolated from other classes, even practicing P.E. separately.

Things suddenly go to a head when one of Koichi's classmates, Yukari Sakuragi, slips while running down the stairs and dies, impaled on the sharp end of her umbrella. This is one of many deaths related to Class 3-3 which have K?ichi and his friends Mei, Naoya Teshigawara, Tomohiko Kazami, and Y?ya Mochizuki, trying to unravel the mystery of 1972's Misaki and the "calamity" that has struck Class 3-3 ever since.

Characters

Koichi Sakakibara
Voiced by: Atsushi Abe
A 15-year-old boy who transferred to Yomiyama North Middle's class 3-3, but was hospitalized due of a pneumothorax right before the school year began. He stays with his grandparents and aunt Reiko, while his father conducts research in India. He befriends Mei Misaki despite warnings against doing so, and works with his classmates to uncover the truth behind the curse of class 3-3.

Mei Misaki
Voiced by: Natsumi Takamori
An unusual girl in Kōichi's class. She is recognizable due to the eyepatch that covers her left eye, a doll's eye crafted by her adoptive mother. She claims it allows her to see the "color of death". At first, she is completely ignored by her classmates and sits in an old, scratched desk at the back of the classroom. Kōichi first meets her on the elevator of Yūmigaoka Hospital, and they gradually become closer. He defends her numerous times, particularly when faced with their very hostile classmates, some of whom believe her to be the "dead one" behind their year's calamity. She appears rather "doll-like" on the surface, but still has human feelings.

Mr. Kubodera
Voiced by: Kozo Mito
Class 3-3 homeroom teacher. After realizing that the countermeasures to the class 3-3 calamity are not working, he kills his comatose mother by smothering, before stabbing himself in the neck in front of the class. He and his mother are the two "Deaths of July".

Tatsuji Chibiki
Voiced by: Hiroaki Hirata
Librarian in charge of the No. 2 library room. He was the teacher for Class 3-3 the "first year", the year Misaki Yomiyama died. Some years later, he resigned as a teacher but stayed on as librarian. Since then, he's kept a record of the phenomena, the deceased and their connections, and shares his findings with Koichi and Mei.

Eye Colour: Grey

Anime Debut: Episode 2
Manga Debut: Chapter 2
Voice Actor: Hirata Hiroaki

Tatsuji Chibiki is a librarian at Yomiyama North Middle School. 26 years ago, in 1972, he was the homeroom teacher for the 9th Grade Class 3.

Personality
In the anime, Kouichi Sakakibara and Reiko describe him as "The Lord of the Library." He claims that he ran away because he felt guilty and was afraid for his life, so he became a librarian instead of a teacher to avoid the class' curse.

He is always serious. In Another 0 chapters, Ryoko claimed the fact that he is not really friendly, he always dresses in black and that it is not easy to get along with him.

Appearance
He is an old man with white hair that reaches past his shoulders, who also wears spectacles. He has shorter hair in the manga.

Plot
He is seen often in the library, and occasionally talks to Mei there.

In episode 6, he tells Kouichi and Mei more about the curse and how the Misaki from 26 years ago was, in fact, a boy. He also informs them that he is an ex-teacher who taught the 9th class in 1972, and ran away, becoming a librarian because of the fear that he would die.

In episode 7, Mr. Kubodera runs a knife into his neck in front of the class, as Koichi and Mei learn from Chibiki that (before killing himself) Kubodera had also murdered his comatose mother.

In episode 9, after Nakao's funeral, Chibiki tells Kouichi and Mei the fact that Junta's death, even if it happened outside Yomiyama, was caused by an event that occurred in Yomiyama.

In episode 10, when Daisuke fell sick he was asking everyone to call 119, but there was no signal. He goes with Daisuke at the hospital.

In episode 11, he is shown driving down the mountain with Daisuke in the car.

In episode 12, he turns back just in time to save Yuuya and Naoya from Keiko. He killed her with a knife and then Chibiki said that they were Ikuo's maternal grandparents and since his death they were emotionally depressed. Chibiki also stops Izumi from killing Kazami, saying that classmates shouldn't kill each other. Later, he got Kouichi, Naoya and Mochizuki outside the building and gave Naoya medical assistance.

Trivia
* In the original novel, he has detailed notes of each year's death. However, unlike in the anime, he has no knowledge of Ritsuko Sakakibara's death.
* He is the advisor of the Drama Club, much to the shock of Kouichi and Naoya. They almost couldn't believe that Chibiki who always wears black clothes can be a good actor.
* He is also shown to be a good cook. In Chapter 16, he cooked all the food for the students at the training camp.
* In the novel he is one of the main characters.

From myanime.me:

Episode 6 (Face to Face)

In the episode prologue, it is shown how Mei was chosen as the student to be ignored, as a charm to prevent the curse of Class 3-3. Mei and Koichi's discussion continues until the arrival of Mei's mother Kirika, who makes the dolls in the museum. They seem to have a very distant relationship, which surprises Koichi. The two begin hanging out and develop a good friendship. Later, while Koichi is on the phone with his father, the latter asks his son how it feels to be back in Yomiyama after being gone for a year and a half, to which Koichi responds he's never been there before. His father appears to think it over, then claims it was a mistake, before the call cuts off. Sometime afterwards, Koichi and Mei go to the library and discuss the curse with Chibiki, who kept records of the events over the past 26 years, and the death of the student Misaki Yomiyama (the "Misaki of 1972"), and shares his findings with them. Sometime later, Mr. Kubodera, homeroom teacher for Class 3-3, begins class by taking a knife out of his bag.

[...]

Chibiki: Oh, two of you here today?
Mei: There are two nonexistent people now.
Chibiki: So I see.
Chibiki: Do you understand the situation now, Sakakibara-kun?
Kouichi: Most of it,
Kouichi: though I still find it hard to believe.
Chibiki: That's understandable.
Chibiki: But it's true.
Chibiki: This phenomenon is truly happening in this town.
Chibiki: In this school.
Kouichi: You were class 3's homeroom teacher 26 years ago, weren't you?
Kouichi: And that's how you knew my mother?
Chibiki: You got it.
Kouichi: Um, is it okay for you to not ignore us?
Chibiki: I have no connections to your class at this time.
Chibiki: I'm in a safe position, you might say.
Kouichi: Then, who's in danger?
Chibiki: The students of class 3
Chibiki: and their families, within two degrees of separation.
Chibiki: And they must live in Yomiyama.
Kouichi: Two degrees would mean parents, grandparents, and siblings?
Kouichi: If they have to be living in Yomiyama,
Kouichi: does that mean anyone who leaves town would be safe?
Chibiki: Yes.
Chibiki: Think of it like a cell phone going out of range.
Kouichi: Um, why do you stay here?
Chibiki: I never meant to harm anyone.
Chibiki: Never...
Chibiki: It seems silly to think that way now,
Chibiki: but that ended up being the trigger,
Chibiki: which opened the door to death.
Chibiki: I was responsible for that.
Chibiki: That's why I remain at this school,
Chibiki: but as a librarian, not a teacher.
Chibiki: Half of that was just me running away.
Kouichi: Running away?
Chibiki: Half of me was crushed by guilt.
Chibiki: But the other half was ruled by fear.
Chibiki: Fear that I might die as well.
Chibiki: So I ran away.
Kouichi: Have teachers died, too?
Chibiki: Only homeroom and assistant homeroom teachers.
Kouichi: Um, was the Misaki of 26 years ago a boy or a girl?
Chibiki: A boy.
Chibiki: His surname was Yomiyama, like this town.
Chibiki: His full name was Yomiyama Misaki.
Chibiki: One night in May, his house burned down.
Chibiki: The whole family died, parents and brother included.
Kouichi: Did you see the photo the dead Misaki-kun appeared in?
Chibiki: Sure did.
Kouichi: Do you have it?
Chibiki: No.
Chibiki: To tell you the truth, it terrified me.
Kouichi: And when they say the school records somehow get altered...
Chibiki: It's true.
Chibiki: This holds copies of all class rosters.
Chibiki: 26 years' worth, from 1972 to the present.
Chibiki: The people with a red "X" by their name
Chibiki: are the ones who died that year.
Chibiki: Look at the roster from two years ago.
Chibiki: See the name written at the bottom?
Kouichi: Yes.
Chibiki: She was the dead person that year.
Kouichi: So, seven people died in 1996?
Kouichi: That's not many, is it?
Chibiki: It's because the plan to make one person nonexistent worked.
Chibiki: After they implemented it, nobody else died.
Chibiki: However, shortly after the second term began,
Chibiki: the student they chose to not exist ended up renouncing the role.
Chibiki: Breaking under the pressure and isolation,
Chibiki: he demanded that he existed, and that everyone treat him accordingly.
Mei: And so it began...
Chibiki: The deceased in 1996 was named Asakura Mami.
Chibiki: But she was originally a student in the 1993 class.
Chibiki: However, between April and June of 1996,
Chibiki: that was not the case.
Kouichi: It wasn't?
Chibiki: Correct.
Chibiki: As I recall, her name was on the 1996 roster.
Chibiki: But it was not on the roster for 1993.
Chibiki: It had disappeared.
Kouichi: Both the name and the "X"?
Chibiki: As you can see, when the phenomenon is active,
Chibiki: checking records is pointless.
Kouichi: And people's memories change too, right?
Chibiki: Exactly.
Chibiki: Then, at the end of the year,
Chibiki: when the deceased disappears after graduation,
Chibiki: the records revert to their original state,
Chibiki: ultimately revealing the extra student.
Chibiki: In addition, all memories of her as the deceased are lost.
Chibiki: Everything is forgotten.
Kouichi: The records and memories just go back to normal?
Chibiki: I cannot comprehend the logic behind it.
Chibiki: I've essentially given up.
Chibiki: There is only one countermeasure that
Chibiki: seems effective enough against this phenomenon:
Chibiki: denying the existence of someone in the class.
Kouichi: What's the success rate?
Chibiki: About 50%.
Chibiki: Some years it works, others it fails.
Chibiki: Some years it's clear why the measure failed,
Chibiki: to others it's unknown.
Kouichi: That's terrible...
Chibiki: It's not a curse.
Chibiki: There is no malice to be found.
Chibiki: It occurs naturally, like a typhoon or earthquake.
Kouichi: Then, will having two nonexistent students be more effective?
Chibiki: I can't say.
Chibiki: There are almost no instances of the calamity stopping midyear.
Kouichi: Really?
Mei: Mikami-sensei was class 3's homeroom teacher in 1996?
Kouichi: Oh, you're right.
Chibiki: She has been through a great deal already.
Chibiki: To make her the assistant homeroom teacher again...
Chibiki: That'll be all for today.
Kouichi: Just one more thing.
Kouichi: Was 1983, 15 years ago, a year when it happened?
Chibiki: 1983?
Chibiki: I believe it was.
Kouichi: I thought so...
Chibiki: Oh, right. That was Reiko's year.
Chibiki: You mean Ritsuko-kun was in Yomiyama then?
Kouichi: Yes.
Kouichi: She came here to have me, and stay with her family.
Chibiki: So she died in this town...
Chibiki: I see.
