[scene opens inside a Chinese public library, as Alan (an undercover cop working for triad boss "Uncle" Hoi) enters and walks past a young female librarian sitting at the front desk, then heads for the "400 Literature" section before pulling out an English language copy of Volume Two of "The Complete Works of Shakespeare", which he brings with him to one of the tables and sits across from another man who - unknown to him - has been targeted as a traitor]
TRAITOR: Alan, I ... I, uh--
[the traitor is visibly startled to see him, while Alan starts casually flipping through the pages of his book]
ALAN: Uncle Hoi wants to know why you betrayed him ...
TRAITOR: [nervously] Uh, listen ... I, I didn't betray him, honestly.
[Alan looks up from the book and gives him a smile]
ALAN: Yeah you did ...
[he flips the page to a hollowed-out portion of the book where a gun is hidden, then stands up and shoots the traitor right between the eyes, as he slumps face first into the book in front of him]
[Alan wipes his fingerprints off the gun and puts it back in his book, then cut to the librarian slowly making her way through the stacks, when she peers over just in time to see Alan walking away from the dead body]
[cut to police investigating the murder scene, as the librarian is being questioned]
POLICEMAN: Do you remember what happened?
LIBRARIAN: It was all so fast ... It was more like a dream.
[Inspector "Tequila" Yuen walks into the scene]
TEQUILA: What's the story?
POLICEMAN: Dead for about two hours. Shot at close range. No resistance.
TEQUILA: Anyone find the gun?
POLICEMAN: Not yet ... Y'know, this guy looks familiar. I think I've seen him on the wanted list.
[Tequila looks at the table, and sees that the pool of blood perfectly outlines the shape of a book]
[cut to Tequila making his way through the stacks, before stopping in the Literature section, where he notices that one of the volumes is slightly ajar ... he pulls out the volume of Shakespeare, notices the dried blood, then opens it up and finds the gun]

From byui.edu:

HARD-BOILED [Lashou shentan] (1992 -- made in Hong Kong). Tony Leung is a police plant in a gang who assassinates someone in a library. The gun used in the crime is hidden in a book on the shelf, and like a good patron the assassin reshelves the book. Yun-Fat Chow, the investigating cop, deduces that there was a book on the table across from the victim (based on the flow of blood) and without consulting the card catalog finds the book and the weapon. He then pursues the bad guy and eventually finds him. A librarian (Hoi-Shan Lai) makes brief appearances.

From imfdb.org:

A .32 ACP Davis P-32 pistol fitted with a homemade suppressor is used by Alan to kill a traitor in his boss's organization. The P-32 is hidden in a hollowed-out volume of Shakespeare plays in a library and then returned to this book after the execution has been completed.
