[Rick O'Connell and a slightly intoxicated Evelyn Carnahan are setting up camp]
RICK: What're you doing here?
EVELYN: [slurring her speech] Oooh! Look, I may not be an explorer, or an adventurer, or a treasure seeker, or a gun fighter, Mister O'Connell! But I am proud of what I am!
RICK: And ... what is that?
EVELYN: I ... am a librarian!

"The Mummy" (1999)

Evelyn "Evy" Carnahan, played by Rachel Weisz, is a bright and vivacious librarian who would like nothing more than to prove herself as a competent field researcher. So, she, along with her brother Jonathan, hatch a plan to find the lost city of Hamunaptra and bring back artifacts, which will validate her skills as a bonified Egyptologist. Initially, Evy starts digging at the base of Anubis, looking for the book of Amun-Ra, when she, Jonathan and Rick are met by Americans looking for the same thing. So, they decide to go off and dig elsewhere. As it turns out, the Americas, led by Dr. Chamberlin, find the Book of The Dead, while Evy manages to find the sarcophagus of Imhotep. Everything appears to be going well for Evy and company, when that night, Evy decides to "borrow" the Book of The Dead from Dr. Chamberlin. As she finishes reading the first passage from the book, everyone begins to hear a horrible sound. Evy doesn't know it, but she has just unleashed a 3000 year old curse.

THE MUMMY

Sommers, Stephen (Director). The Mummy. United States: Universal Pictures, 1999.

Starring: Rachel Weisz (Evelyn Carnahan); Brendan Fraser (Rick O'Connell)

Librarians everywhere applaud Evie's drunken declaration of pride: "I ... am a ... librarian!" Her profession advances the storyline, since her wealth of book-learning gives vital information to the seekers of the lost city and its treasures. (In the sequel where this information is no longer critical, her role as librarian is dropped.) This film features the best of the falling bookcases scenes -- and for once they serve a purpose, establishing character. ("Oops!") And though Evie is not a superhero, she needs to be included on any list of strong and daring female librarians in the cinema. This movie is one of the most relevant librarian movies out there, once you look past all that sand, all those things going boom, all those bugs ...

[INSIDE THE CAIRO MUSEUM OF ANTIQUITIES]
Evelyn: [on a ladder reshelving books in the stacks] Socrates ... Seth ... Volume One, Volume Two, and Volume Three ... Tuthmosis? What are you doing here? T, T ... Ah, I need to put you where you belong. [tries to reach over to the shelves on the opposite side but ends up losing her balance and knocking all the shelves in a domino effect]
Dr. Bey: [stutters in disbelief] Oh look at this! Sons of the pharaohs! Give me frogs! Flies, locusts! Anything but you. Compared to you the other plagues were a joy!
Evelyn: I am so very sorry, it was an accident.
Dr. Bey: My darling girl, when Ramses destroyed Syria, that was an accident. You are a catastrophe! Look at my library! Why do I put up with you?
Evelyn: Well, you put up with me because I can read and write ancient Egyptian, and I can decipher hieroglyphs and hieratic, and I am the only person within a thousand miles who knows how to properly code and catalogue this library, that's why!
Dr. Bey: I put up with you because your father and mother were our finest patrons, that's why! Allah rest their souls ... I don't care how you do it, I don't care how long it takes, straighten up this meshuggeneh!
